`I'M TAKING A CHANCE, LETTING YOU INSIDEPOSITIVE TRAITS
- Mature - At 24 most guys are still horsing around and figuring out what to do with themselves. Probably out of college they are in the job world and still having those late nights and parties. Not Greg. Greg has officially grown up and grew the balls of manhood. He never really had that time in his life to be a goof-ball, to go to frat parties and hook-up with girls in a drunken stupor.
- Multi-tasking - Part of being a father and maturing means learning to multi-task. Greg hasn't completely conquered it like his own parents have, but he's well on his way. He can do laundry, make dinner, and keep Carly entertained all at the same time. What a man!
- Selfless - As a teenager, Greg was like every other teen, always thinking about himself and how things would work out in his favor. Now that he is a father, things can't always go his way anymore. He has to work his schedule around that of his daughter's and he now worries about her before himself. He may go without eating so he's not late for work, but he sure as hell makes sure Carly eats something before being dropped off with a sitter.
- Responsible - If Greg wasn't responsible there would be no way in hell Carly would still be with him. It's a little scary being responsible for another human being all by yourself, but it has more rewarding days then not. He makes sure she gets to doctor's appointments and new clothes when she grows out of them and three meals a day and quality time with dad.
- Driven - Greg wants his daughter to have the best he can afford and he will try his darnedest to get it for her. He wants to do everything right the first time, but that's not always possible. Especially since he ended up with a child before marriage and before college, but he's determined to go back to school when the time is right.
NEGATIVE TRAITS
- Messy - He may be responsible and mature and able to multi-task, but he's still a guy. He isn't dirty and his apartment isn't dirty, he knows how to run a vacuum. It's more clutter than anything. Toys mostly and things that obviously belonged to a child. Bills and newspapers are on the tables and dishes in the sink, but not piled so high they flow over the counter.
- Scatter-brained - Sure he can multi-task, but when under a lot of pressure he becomes scatter-brained and will forget little things. When he was first on his own with Carly, he dropped her off at the babysitter but then forgot to pick her up after he got out of work. He still does that occasionally too. They aren't big slip-ups but noticeable ones.
- Drop-out - Carly was born the summer between high school graduation and college. Greg had already started classes at the community college, while helping Harper, when Harper took off and left Greg with their baby daughter. Unable to keep up with school and an infant, Greg dropped out of school. He regrets it and it makes things difficult now, but he would have chosen Carly over school any day.
- Tempted alcoholic - Being a father and carrying out a job to pay the bills and take care of yourself and your daughter is a lot of stress. Greg has often been tempted to drink away the stress, but each time he picks up the bottle he puts it down with the thought of how it would effect Carly. He knows if he were to become an alcoholic the state would take her from him for sure, but it's just so tempting sometimes.
- Tardy - Greg is a reliable person, but his reliability is always late. He doesn't always show up to work or events on time because of his fatherly duties. It has gotten him in some trouble before but people understand for the most part.
LIKES
- Carly - Carly is Greg's 5-year-old daughter, if you do the math that means she was born when he was 19. Yes. Greg loves that little girl more than anything in the world and would do anything for her.
- Alcohol - Greg knows alcohol is a way to get away from the stress in his life, but he is afraid to touch the stuff. He just likes the idea that it is still there if he ever caves.
- Working - Working gives Greg a good sense of satisfaction, especially when he gets that paycheck. He can finally pay the bills, or some of them, and then go food shopping and take care of Carly, at least until the paycheck is gone.
- Reading - Greg enjoys reading everything from forensic theories to Dr. Seuss. And the Dr. Seuss is one things he can't get away from since it is Carly's favorite.
- Spring - He likes spring because everything that is dead or dying and gray is now green and colorful and living. Kind of a corny reason to like spring, but it reminds him of Carly so he can't help but like it.
DISLIKES
- Harper - Harper was Greg's steady girlfriend in highschool and is the mother of Carly. Even though Greg would do anything for Carly, he wouldn't lift a pinky at Harper. She was the one who walked out and left Carly to be put into the system, something Greg wouldn't allow.
- School - He doesn't hate school, but he hates that he never got the chance to complete it. He also hates that you need a degree to get a half-decent job anymore. The most he is thankful for is that he graduated highschool, that counts for something at least.
- Work - Work interferes with his role of being a father, even though it is part of the job description. He doesn't like going to work because it takes away his time with Carly, but at the same time knows that he needs a job to care for her.
- Sick Carly - Any parent hates when their child is sick and Greg is no different.
- Living paycheck to paycheck - It's probably the hardest thing with a child, living on your paycheck. He has a very small amount in his savings account, but he tries to put money in when he can. He also tries never to touch it, knowing that it is for emergencies, or if none arise, Carly's education.
HOPES AND DREAMS Well, before Carly came along, Greg wanted to attend college and major in Forensic Science, his grades in chemistry were through the roof. He didn't think much about children before Harper got pregnant. Now that he has Carly, Greg's hopes for the future have changed in her favor. Now, he just wants his daughter to have a childhood and a great life. He wants to be able to give her the best things, even though he can't always. He hopes his daughter will grow up with a head on her shoulders and make it through college and do all the things she wants to. His own hopes and dreams are on the back burner for now.
FEARS Greg isn't afraid of many things. He's okay with heights and airplanes; spiders and snakes. What he is really afraid of is losing Carly. Not only to death, but also to Harper or social services. He tries to be the best father he can, but he knows he wouldn't be up to the system's standards. If it were to come to a custody battle, the system usually sides with the mother, but in this case the best interest of the child would be with Greg. But since he hasn't heard from Harper in years, he's not too worried about it yet. What he is worried about is turning into an alcoholic. His life is mostly stress and the bottle is an easy way out, at least temporarily. But his fear of what would happen to Carly overshadows the will to drink.
`FEELING ALIVE ALL OVER AGAINCELEBRITY CLAIM Eric Szmanda
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION In highschool Greg used to be the jock and therefore was always decked in Abercrombie or Hollister or Nike or...whatever, all the name brands. He came from a well off family so they had the money to afford those kind of shopping trips. However, now he is usually seen in jeans from Wal-Mart...come to think of it most of what he buys is from Wal-Mart or a cheaper store. He can still occasionally be seen in stuff from his teen years, if it still happens to fit him. He keeps his hair short and likes to spike it, but he runs his fingers through it so much it just ends up looking messy. But it's the kind of mess that looks good on him. His hair is dirty blonde with dark roots. It looks like he highlights his hair, but he doesn't. He doesn't have the money for it anyway. Hah.
`AS DEEP AS THE SKY, UNDER MY SKINHISTORY Alright, Greg Resh. To start off, Greg was born to a pretty wealthy household here in Chicago. His father is the manager of a Ford dealership and his mother works at a bank. Greg was never exactly sure what she did, he just told people she worked at a bank and let them draw their own conclusions. Anyway, Greg grew up with the best of just about everything. Even his parents, with their demanding jobs, found time to spend quality time with him and together as a family. Finally a family that knew how to do it right! They always sat down together at dinner and went on vacations every summer. There was no "too busy we'll do it tomorrow"'s or brushing him off like he was a pesky fly. No. His parents always found time for him if he wanted to talk.
In school, Greg had a lot of friends and was placed in the "popular" crowd almost from the get-go. He started the kickball games and picked teams and if he didn't he was always first or second picked. As soon as he was old enough, Greg was in Little League and Soccer. And yes, his parents were always at his games. If not both of them, at least one was. There were celebratory parties for the wins and ice cream for the losses. In middle school he joined football in the fall and did track & field in the spring while still doing little league at the Y. He also didn't fall into the stereotype that jocks were dumb. On the contrary, Greg was very smart. He was placed in the gifted class and kept with it. Eventually he was voluntarily removed from the program because it gave him less time for his after school activities. But in highschool he remained in the advanced placement classes for science and math. Science was his forte and math was easy enough since it went along with it for the most part.
Chemistry was Greg's calling and he loved it. He loved figuring out how things worked and how to make things by mixing what chemicals. He started taking Forensics as an elective and got even deeper involved with science. Forensics was the most fascinating thing in the world to him. First only to a cheerleader named Harper. Since they were Sophomores, Harper and Greg had been dating and things were pretty serious between them. Everyone who was anyone knew of Greg and Harper. Rumors went around that they had already set a marriage date, put a down payment on a house, and got life insurance. Needless to say those rumors were a little extreme and therefore untrue. No, the furthest Harper and Greg thought ahead was college. They wanted to go to different schools, but the distance wasn't more then two hours apart. It could work.
But, things began to spin out of control the summer after graduation. Harper bombarded Greg one afternoon in May with the news that she was pregnant and he was going to pay. He suddenly saw his future vanish before his eyes and begin to form something new, but it was hazy. Harper didn't tell her parents about the pregnancy and made Greg promise not to tell his. When he asked why she said it was because she was going to get an abortion and would rather not have a huge stink about it. Abortion? The word rang in Greg's head and he didn't know whether to be angry or hurt. Either way he didn't want Harper to have an abortion, it wasn't right or fair. What about what he wanted? Eventually, after a lot of fighting, he talked her out of it, but she was furious with him. Mostly because in order to prevent her from doing it he had to tell his parents, which was what he wanted to do anyway. And they then talked to Harper's parents and they all ganged up on her. Probably not the best way to go about it, but Greg knew Harper wouldn't listen to him any other way.
So, for the remainder of the summer, Greg spent it going to doctor's visits and being with Harper. When September rolled around, Greg and Harper both went to the local community college part-time. Greg also got a job working with his dad to help pay, as Harper had demanded. December 22nd Harper went into labor and on the morning of the 23rd at exactly 4:23 a.m. their daughter, Carly, was born. Greg never saw anything like it in his life and never felt so happy and proud any other time ever. It was true what everyone said, about falling in love with their children the moment they see them, because Greg did. It didn't bother him that this little girl was going to be the rest of his life now it was like it didn't matter.
For about a month after Carly was brought home from the hospital Greg and Harper did nothing but argue. Harper didn't seem to understand that Carly was a baby and babies cried, sometimes for no reason. She was constantly handing her off to Greg and when he went home, she would show up with Carly in tow. Sometimes she would even barge in, hand Carly to Greg then take off to "have some time to herself" meaning she was going out with friends to party. Greg was furious that Harper didn't seem to care at all about their daughter, like she was just a puppy that could be taken care of by anyone. That was the biggest thing they fought about. Then, one night when Harper dropped off Carly, she never returned. No phone call, no note. She didn't even tell her parents she was leaving, but they weren't too surprised. Greg was beside himself with worry and anger. What if something happened to her? How could she do this to her child! To Greg! Whatever they had in highschool wasn't what Greg thought it was. He had loved her and he thought she loved him. Apparently she blamed him for Carly, but it wasn't entirely his fault. Sure it was his sperm, but it wasn't like he had forced her to spread her legs. She was just as responsible!
A few days turned into a month, and finally Greg couldn't handle school, a job, and Carly by himself so he ended up dropping out of school. The month turned into a few and finally a year. Just after Christmas, Greg finally decided to make the big move and make a life for himself and his daughter. His parents had been great about the whole thing, but he didn't want to spend the rest of his life under their roof, it wasn't fair to them. He started going apartment hunting until he found one with decent rent that wasn't a dump. Until he found a new job, his parents helped pay for the rent and some of the bills, but Greg didn't want them to do everything. Even though he would easily have pawned off all responsibility on them, he didn't want to do that. Harper did it to him and he didn't want to stoop to her level. He didn't even want to think about Harper anymore and he wouldn't. It didn't take long for Greg to get a job as a bartender at a club, Carly helped with that. Nothing like a good pity story to soften people up. He even brought her in the day of the interview. Mostly because he didn't have anyone to watch her but it was only a bonus to his case. A single twenty-year-old dad taking care of his daughter because her mother hit the road and never looked back. Excellent.
That was all four years ago. Carly is now five-years-old, Greg twenty-four. They have been sharing a one bedroom apartment for four years and recently, Greg has moved out of the bedroom to the couch, allowing his daughter to have her own room. He just keeps his clothes and things in there, the rest is all for Carly's things. He still gets money from his parents, but not because he asks for it. They just hand it to him and tell him not to argue, Carly is their granddaughter after all. Because her birthday is so late, Carly missed the start of Kindergarten this year, and will be starting next year. Greg is amazed at how fast the years went and how long ago it was that Harper abandoned Carly. It's not himself Greg feels sorry for, or Carly for that matter, it's Harper. She is the one missing everything. Usually it's the guy that takes off, looks like Greg got the shit end of the relationship. No, Harper did. Greg got the better end and he'd admit it to anyone.

ANYTHING ELSE TO TELL US? I'm still unsure if I want Harper to be an adoptable character, but I think it would be interesting if she were to show up.
