`FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE I'M SCARED TO DEATHFULL NAME Born: Natalija Ana Kovac (pronounced Kovach)
Changed to: Natalie Ana Kovac
NICKNAME Nat, Ana, Anðeo (angel in Croatian, her dad called her this)
AGE twenty-one
GENDER female
ORIENTATION straight
STUDENT OR ADULT adultIF STUDENT: YOUR LEVEL IS
IF ADULT: YOUR JOB IS a receptionist
`I'M TAKING A CHANCE, LETTING YOU INSIDEPOSITIVE TRAITS
- independent - Natalie wasn't always as independent as she is now, it was something that came over time and through life experiences. She is very capable of taking care of herself, and has been ever since she was legally allowed to (by US laws, anyway). Though she has yet to go to college, she has made a life and a home for herself while working as a receptionist for a local Chicago-based company.
- reliable - One thing Natalie knows is the importance of having a good work ethic. If her boss asks something of her, she is sure to get it done. In fact, if anyone asks something of her (assuming it is someone she knows and likes) she is sure to do it and do it to the best of her ability.
- strong - Isn't this every guy's fear? A strong woman? Well, if it is, too bad. Natalie is a very strong woman, which is probably one of the reasons why she isn't in a stable relationship. She is independent, capable, determined, and so on and so forth. Emotionally she is strong as well. Natalie has been through enough that she has built up a wall that keeps a lot of her emotions locked inside. Her only downfall is that, regarding pursuing her dream, she has a hard time getting herself started.
- creative - Natalie has a very wild imagination, and has ever since she was a little girl. People don't really know this about her, since he isn't one to share her inner thoughts (or her writing), but she has a way of thinking outside the box rather than staying inside it. This trait is one of the things that will aid her in her dream of writing a novel.
- accepts authority - Even though Natalie isn't very trusting of people, to those who have authority over her she is polite. She understands that she can't always have things her way all the time, especially in work situations, and also understand that there is no point in fighting the higher authority because it will only make things worse for her.
- affectionate - The woman has a pretty tough outer shall, but if by some miracle you are able to break through that she is actually a very kind an affectionate person. The only reason she is so rough around the edges is because she has a hard time trusting and getting to know people. Absent of all of that, she can be one of the sweetest people in the world.
NEGATIVE TRAITS
- rebellious - She will be polite to anyone who has some sort of authority over her (or people she likes) but as for everyone else she doesn't understand why she should have to do what they tell her. Natalie rarely ever listens to people's commands, and never listens at all to those of strangers. In return, she never asks anything of anyone, it seems fair enough.
- guarded - Natalie does not open up, at all, unless it is to her family or someone that she really trusts. She isn't the kind of person who likes to get all emotionally and bare her feelings, they aren't anyone else's business. To get her emotions out, the girl will most often times write in her journal or pen some sort of crazy story.
- untrusting - People have yet to give Natalie a reason to trust them. The one time she asked someone if they could hold her purse for a couple seconds while she picked up some things that she had dropped, she ended up missing her credit cards. This person had been someone she considered a friend, too. That isn't the only reason why she doesn't trust people though, this is a deeply rooted trait stemming from post-traumatic stress she experienced as a child.
- close-minded - As creative as she may be, Natalie has a hard time accepting other people's ideas. Sometimes she may force herself to, given the situation, but other times it is just a flat-out "no." She is incredibly picky about the way she likes things done and if someone else ruins that, Natalie will not be happy.
- stubborn - This is probably a dangerous thing to mix with her bring close-minded. Unless she has to, Natalie will not give in to someone else's ideas, because she thinks that hers are better or the right ideas. Even if she knows that she is wrong, she will argue with someone until she has convinced both herself and that person that she is right.
- occasionally rude - Only toward people she doesn’t know, and only if she doesn't get a good vibe from them...or if they are annoying her. Natalie does try her best to be nice to people she doesn't know or are not close to, but if they choose to irk her then it doesn't always work out that way. To make a long story short, if she doesn't like you then you will know it.
LIKES
- writing - A lot of Natalie's free time is spent writing - both in her journal and just for fun. When she writes in her journal it helps her get rid of a lot of stress and calms her down when she is upset about something. She prefers to write creatively though, because it also helps her get rid of stress and at the same time she can write about absolutely anything that she wants to. Natalie can completely immerse herself in it and become entirely engulfed in her own worlds.
- her cat, diego - She got Diego a few months ago when she began to feel lonely in her apartment. Natalie isn't planning on becoming a cat lady or anything, but she had wanted a pet for a long time and figured it was better late than never. He tears things up and leaves toilet paper all over the apartment, but he is still a sweetheart and she loves him.
- rainy days - There is something very serene and calming about them. Whenever it's pouring Natalie likes to sit by her window for a little while and watch the rain fall, usually while dreaming up new things to write about. She doesn't like being stuck inside all of the time though, so sunny days are equally as admired.
- sour gummy worms - They are her favorite candy. Warheads are too sour and everything else just doesn't cut it, but Sour Gummy Worms are just right. When she first moved to the United States she was afraid to try them, because she thought that they were real worms, but when her dad explained to her that they weren't she tried and loved them.
- kids - Despite how closed off and uncomfortable Natalie feels around a lot of people, kids are a completely different story. She loves them, and can't wait until she is married so she can have some of her own. They are so innocent and imaginative that she can't help but smile around them.
- the united states - Not that she doesn't like Croatia, in fact Natalie misses it terribly, but the United States offers so much more than she could have gotten back home. On top of that, she feels safer in the US, as compared to "across the pond," as Americans say.
- roses - Especially red or white ones. They are so beautiful and they smell so sweet. Every now and again she buys some up put around her apartment to brighten up the place a little bit.
DISLIKES
- sheep - Actually, Natalie doesn't dislike sheep, she just doesn't like to be around them. Why? She's allergic, and always breaks out in a sneezing fit when near one. It made it hard for her as a kid to go to a petting zoo, despite how much she wanted to. In fact, when she was little, she wanted a baby sheep as a pet. That dream soon died...
- american television - There are too many reality shows! It to be all that is every on. If she finds something that isn't a reality show then she can sit down and enjoy it, but honestly there is too much of it. Natalie tried watching one thing, what was it called...the Bachelor? She hated it. It was just a bunch of hussies trying to bag a man on television since they couldn't keep one in real life.
- people who are nosy - Natalie is a very private person, and doesn't like people picking around in her things or in her life. It goes along with her being very closed off. If someone starts looking around at her things or begins drilling her with questions about her life or what it was like growing up she will more likely than not become angry and either yell at them or walk away - depending on her overall mood that day.
- uncleanliness - She hates cleaning as much as the next person, but what Natalie hates even more is dirt, dust, grim, all that stuff. As a result, her apartment and work area is always neat and tidy. She cleans her apartment every week or so, meaning dusting and vacuuming and the like. She also has to keep her apartment clean because Natalie is allergic to dust (along with sheep), and in the winter when the windows are almost always closed if she doesn't clean her allergies act up on her.
- triscuts - They taste funny. She doesn't understand how people like them. They are like cardboard.
- dandelions - They are ugly weeds and they get everywhere! Natalie used to live outside the city and there were people who wouldn't mow their lawns for a while and their yards would practically be completely yellow. Call her old fashioned, but she likes yards to be green.
- loud music - Natalie is a quiet person, which reflects in how she plays her music. There are some people down the hall from her who are always blasting their music, and she hates it. If she puts on music it is usually something soft, like classical, and it is not very loud. She also can't stand rap and hip-hop and all those kinds of music.
HOPES AND DREAMS Natalie wants what almost every woman wants. She wants to meet a man who she absolutely adores and loves, get married, move out of the city into a nice house, and have kids. She also wants to learn how to be more open and trusting of others. As for her future job, Natalie aspires to be a journalist, and publish a popular novel.
FEARS She doesn't know why, but Natalie is deathly afraid of driving. She always either walks, takes a cab or the L, or lets someone else drive her. She has never even wanted to learn how to drive, because the idea of it scares her so much.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION Natalie Kovac has a petite stature, standing at around 5 feet, 3 inches. It is something she's used to though, because she has always been a little shorter than others her age. It's no big deal to her anymore. She has a square jaw, which sets her apart from some other women, full lips, and hazel eyes matched by her long, brunette hair. She doesn't normally wear much makeup, but Natalie does wear mascara to accentuate her long eyelashes. Her figure is slender and healthy, since she hasn't really given in to junk food much. She prefers the taste of healthier foods. She has a good complexion, on most days, fair skin that burns easily in the summer.
`AS DEEP AS THE SKY, UNDER MY SKINHISTORY Natalija Ana Kovac was born in Croatia on February 18th, 1988 as the younger of two kids. She had one older brother and a mother and a father who loved them both very much. They were by no means a rich family, but they had enough to get by. The four of them lived together in an apartment complex with many other families, so the kids always had someone to play with growing up. It was the perfect environment for a little girl. Everyone was caring and loved to help each other out. It was the kind of place where you could leave your door open to get a nice cross breeze and not have to worry about anyone sneaking in and taking something.
Things were great for her and her family, until she turned three. The rise of chauvinism in Croatia throughout the 80s had brought lots of tension, and in 1991 the Croatian War of Independence finally broke out. What before was a peaceful neighborhood was now a danger to anyone who dared venture outside. Natalija's life was indoors, as was her older brother's and her mother's. Her father was the one who would go out and buy food and god to work, and he always urged them to stay inside and be safe. She was still young, so she didn't understand, but stayed inside as her father told her to.
In 1992, there was a ceasefire, and Natalija father decided to go to America to try and set up a better life for his family. He promised them that he would be back as he kissed her on the head one more time and called her his little Anðeo. Since she was only four, she little girl still didn't completely understand everything. She knew that things were bad, but she didn't understand that her dad wouldn't be coming home for a long time. Natalija would wait for him by the door every day at the time he would normally be coming home from work, only to be discouraged when her mother found her and shooed her away, and even more so when her daddy wasn't home to hug her goodnight.
Two years passed and things only got worse. Croatia continued to fall apart and the Kovacs, along with other families, could barely earn enough money for food. Natalija, her brother, and her mother rationed their food as best they could, and her brother always told her to try and leave a little more for mom, since she seemed really sad and he hoped it would cheer her up. It didn't. In fact, the lack of food and money was the least of their problems. The violence in Croatia became very bad, and one night a rocket was launched into one of the windows of their apartment building and, as it blew the flames caught a gas line, which made the whole building go up in smoke. Natalija awoke from a deep sleep to see smoke filling her room and some of the walls scorched. Her older brother was pounding on her door and coughing, but he couldn't open it since she kept it locked.
The little girl slid her shoes on and ran to the door, opening it to see her brother and orange flames engulfing the apartment behind him. The two of them were lucky that their rooms were just far enough away from the explosion, but that didn't stop the rest of their home from being ruined. She was grabbed by her older brother and he told her to cover her eyes as he lead them through the maze of fire, all while she called for their mother. Natalija felt him stop, then opened her eyes to see their mom on the kitchen floor, her hair and her clothes on fire while she laid there asleep. At least, that was what Natalija though. She cried and screamed for her mom to wake up, but she didn't, and when she tried to run to her, her older brother grabbed her arm and kept her from doing so.
The next thing that she could remember, Natalija was coming to outside whilst hearing a familiar voice shouting "Natalija! Moj malen anðeo, probuditi se!" She opened her eyes to see her father and her brother looking over her. The little girl had passed out from inhaling to much smoke. As it turned out, though, their father had finally come home, and was just turning onto their street when he saw their apartment building in flames. He had come back to help them pack and come with him to America where he had made a life for them. He had a house and a good job an a little dog as a surprise for them. But, as happy as she was to finally see her dad again, the image of her mom lying on the kitchen floor was burned in her memory forever.
He did take them back to America with him, eventually, to a nice little house just outside of a big city in suburbia. However, Natalija couldn't enjoy it, she was no longer the same little girl. She became very secluded and didn't like to talk much. Doctors said it was post-traumatic stress, and that given time and love it would take care of itself. But it didn't. Instead of going back to normal, by the age of nine she was what Americans would call a "brat." She was polite to her family and her teachers, but to everyone else she was disrespectful, guarded, and even mean at times. Unfortunately, over time it stuck and became her personality. On top of that, she was becoming increasingly frustrated with people constantly pronouncing her name Na-ta-lee-gia. She had loved her name before, but now that it was giving her so much grief she was beginning to hate it. However, when she asked her dad to change her name, he said no.
Time went by, she got older and acquired a bigger mouth, and when Natalija turned 18 she finally legally changed her name herself to the American version, Natalie, after finishing high school. Her older brother saw it as her turning her back on their heritage, but Natalie didn't see it that way at all. Besides, it was an equally pretty name, and she still loved her heritage. At 19, she moved out of the house and into Chicago where she skipped around jobs for a year before finally finding one as a Receptionist at a Chicago-based company. She hates the job, but sticks with it anyway since it gives her enough money to pay the bills. What she really wants to do is go to college for journalism, but she is afraid to get herself started.
