Here was one of the wonderful things about Chicago: The L. For those who didn't have a car, didn't want a car, or for any other reason did not have access to a vehicle it was a life saver. Sure, there were always cabs, but the L was cheaper and a little more fun, if you liked that sort of thing. It had been a while since Noelle had taken the train, so she figured it wouldn't hurt. Her car was indisposed and taking a cab, well, it just wasn't that kind of day. The woman wasn't in the mood for watching her bill go up while the driver took his time and whilst silently deciding to take her the long while as to make her owe him more. Many drivers made the mistake of thinking that she was a tourist that would fall for that, but she wasn't. It made Noelle very angry, and considering how nice of a day it was she didn't want to put herself in a position that would cause her irritation, especially since it had already been a long morning.
It began with the woman locking her apartment and car keys in her apartment. Normally they were in her purse, but she had forgotten to put them back in the night before and they were left sitting on the table just inside the door. So, she had to get the spare key and since there was a new person working in her building, it took a little while to convince them that she did in fact live there. Then, after that dilemma was resolved, Noelle walked to her car in the garage down the street and when she tried to start it, it made a whirring noise and died on her. It wasn't that hard to get it inspected to see what was wrong, but it had already been inspected a few weeks ago. It was getting old, and to the point where the girl had decided that if one more thing happened to it that was it, she wasn't going to pay to fix it again. It would be much more worth it to just buy a new car.
It wasn't that far of a walk to her dentist appointment, and Noelle knew that she would still be on time if she didn't take it slow. So the woman booked it to the dentist's office, sat in the chair for a routine cleaning and check-up, stood outside for another ten minutes or so after words wondering what she should do on the chilly, yet nice, day, and ended up waiting on a bench on the platform on the L train stop. She had decided that she would try to find a new car today, to replace the piece of junk sitting in the garage back home. Something classy, but not overly expensive. You know, something that you could be proud to own while at the same time not burning a huge hole in your wallet. A car that was comfortable, sleek, and oil efficient would make her happy, maybe with an added sunroof and satellite radio.
Noelle leaned back on the bench and crossed one leg over the other as she waited for the train, setting her purse down beside her. It had been a long time since she had taken the L, in fact the last time was probably before she had her car. The woman hoped quietly that she was taking the right line, though she was sure she was since she had checked the map three times and asked a few people to make sure. If it wasn't the right one, it wasn't a big deal, Noelle just didn't want to end up in some strange part of the city that she had never visited where even though it was the middle of the day things were dark and dead. Granted, that was probably only a movie-type of setting but you never knew! The girl had already been surprised by a group of thugs once this month; she didn't want it to happen again.
The November chill made Noelle pull her jacket a little tighter, though she was sure she would be kept warm enough from the thick scarf she had wrapped around her neck. The weather was calling for snow soon, and the girl couldn't wait. Yes, the cold was annoying, but seeing Chicago covered in snow was beautiful. It was probably one of her favorite sights in the world. That, and chocolate. It was even more beautiful when the city was decorated for Christmas, just the thought of it made her feel excited for the oncoming holiday season. Until then though, she would have to wait, and get a new car.
